Radio frequency jammers - also known as RF jammers, bomb jammers, radio jammers, and other radio frequency jammer devices - are designed to prevent other communication devices from successfully operating. RF jamming devices interrupt communications by broadcasting radio transmissions on the particular frequencies used by the targeted devices. Radio jamming is often used to prevent the use of RF devices in a specific area.
They do this by generating disruptive rf jamming signals on the frequencies used by radio devices to communicate with antenna towers and by doing so actively jamming radio frequencies. It's a called a radio frequency jammer denial-of-service attack. The radio frequency jammer denies service of the radio spectrum to the users within range of the rf jammer device. Less complex bomb jammer devices block only one group of frequencies, while sophisticated bomb jammers can block several types of radio networks at once to head off dual-mode or tri-mode radios that automatically switch among different radio network types to find an open signal. Some of the high-end rf jammer devices block all frequencies at once, and other radio jamming devices can be tuned to specific frequencies.
The actual range of a radio jamer depends on its power and the local environment, which may include hills or walls of a building that block the radio frequency jamming signal. Low-powered rf jammers block calls in a range of about 30 feet (9 m). Higher-powered bomb jammers create a radio signal-free zone as large as a football field. Bomb jammer units used by law enforcement can shut down service up to 1 mile (1.6 km) from the bomb jammer device.
